Scripture: Colossians 1:9-14
Theme: We cannot be happy or flourish in life without a continual attitude of gratitude. This is the result of humbly admitting the giftedness of life – all that God graciously gives us that we do not deserve.
“Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise.” (Psalm 100:4) How fitting that we should come before God with this attitude. Each day, let us enter His presence with thanksgiving and praise. We may tell God, “Thanks for everything!” But that doesn’t make us truly grateful for anything. We should call to mind specific instances when we were awed by the love or power of God. I keep a long list of specific reasons to give God thanks and praise. Whenever a testimony, blessing or Bible verse touches my heart, I give it a title and add it to my list. I meditate on four items each morning, so they come up in the rotation less than once a month. For example, one title is: “$5 tip.” I was totally broke in 1985. I didn’t have enough gas for the long drive home after my roofing job.
The homeowner didn’t know this, but that was the only time someone ever gave me a tip. That $5 was enough to get me home and pick up my paycheck the next day. That story always causes my heart to overflowing with gratitude.
