Many years ago when I was in junior high school, my history teacher stood in front of the class on the first day and wrote the word ‘History’ in chalk on the blackboard. He then explained that this word meant ‘His’ ‘Story,’ that is, God’s story! All these years later I still remember this! What he was saying is that all the records of human history are an accounting of how God is working out His plan for the world.
In other words, there is a grand narrative unfolding in human history and God is the One writing the story. This is not obvious. No. On the contrary, it looks like there have been and are many peoples and many nations with separate, unrelated histories. It appears to be a divided world where every nation lives unto itself. But God reveals in the Bible that there is a single plan for the ages that is being worked out and it is this:
For God had allowed us to know the secret of his plan, and it is this: he purposes in his sovereign will that all human history shall be consummated in Christ, that everything that exists in Heaven or earth shall find its perfection and fulfilment in him. Ephesians 1:10 (J. B. Phillips)
In recent weeks at Abundant Grace, we have been thinking about the theme of unity. We have considered unity in the church family, unity in marriage and now – unity in history. We look around the world and see many different races, tribes, classes, nations and empires with different gods, different customs, different political structures, different histories and different lands.
Christianity enters this world of pluralities and announces a set of singularities. There is only One God, One Savior, one human family, one world under God and one plan of the ages. Since there is only one true God, there can be only one grand story.
It is a great comfort to believe this, to believe that the unseen hands of a good God are guiding the course of this world. And if you come to church this Sunday, you will learn how we can have a small part in bringing God’s plan to fulfilment.
With love in Jesus,
