The Men’s Retreat during the weekend of January 30-31, ran with the theme 7 Mountains: Seven spheres of influence to shape our societies for Christ. The Retreat was organized by Shanghai Business Man’s Fellowship (SBMF) and the guest speaker was Loren Cunningham, founder of Youth With A Mission(YWAM).
The retreat was well attended by men from a variety of churches throughout Shanghai. The weekend began on Friday evening with an introduction and meal, followed by prayers on Saturday morning, teaching, reflection and discussion. Worship was led by a team who powerfully inspired everyone, lifting God higher in praise and thanksgiving. Loren Cunningham taught with uplifting testimony from his own life, including how the ‘seven mountains’ concept came to be. Briefly, ‘seven mountains’ is a way of dividing our societies into seven areas (business, government, media, arts and entertainment, education, the family and religion) through which all society can be influenced by Christians in their workplaces.
The main theme men reported was ‘hearing God’s voice.’ Each person has their own calling and their own arena in which to work it out. We should intentionally draw close to God so that he can draw close to us, clearing our hearts of sin and offenses, and then confidently ask Him to reveal his plans for our lives. Cunningham affirmed that God will always ask us to take a role in his commission,
Jesus said to them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.’” (Mark 16:15).
Cunningham emphasized ‘all the world’ by rephrasing it to ‘let not even one be left out.’ This brings us back to the core message that Christians have exciting opportunities and also responsibilities to do what Jesus is doing in every atmosphere and moment of our lives, but what we should do each day comes through listening to God’s voice, and following his plan.
Cunningham’s mission was to inspire, motivate and encourage these men to bring Jesus into their working lives. The retreat itself bonded fellow Christian men together so they could unite in prayer, build relationships and motivate one-another.
